The Prestige

"Every great magic trick consists of three parts or acts. The first part is called "The Pledge". The magician shows you something ordinary: a deck of cards, a bird or a man. He shows you this object. Perhaps he asks you to inspect it to see if it is indeed real, unaltered, normal. But of course... it probably isn't. The second act is called "The Turn". The magician takes the ordinary something and makes it do something extraordinary. Now you're looking for the secret... but you won't find it, because of course you're not really looking. You don't really want to know. You want to be fooled. But you wouldn't clap yet. Because making something disappear isn't enough; you have to bring it back. That's why every magic trick has a third act, the hardest part, the part we call "The Prestige"."

"Chaque tour de magie comporte trois parties ou actes. La première s'appelle "La Promesse". Le magicien vous présente quelque chose d'ordinaire: un jeu de carte, un oiseau ou un homme. Il vous le présente. Peut-être même vous invite t-il à l'examiner, afin de constater qu'il est en effet réel, intact, normal. Mais il est bien entendu loin de l'être. Le deuxième acte s'appelle "Le Tour". Le magicien utilise cette chose ordinaire pour lui faire accomplir quelque chose d'extraordinaire. Alors vous cherchez le secret mais vous ne le trouvez pas. Parce que, bien entendu, vous ne le regardez pas attentivement. Vous n'avez pas vraiment envie de savoir. Vous avez envie d'être dupé. Mais vous ne pouvez vous résoudre à applaudir, parce que faire disparaître quelque chose est insuffisant. Encore faut-il le faire revenir. C'est pourquoi pour chaque tour de magie, il existe un troisième acte, le plus difficile, celui que l'on nomme "Le Prestige"."
